I6-House: A Sculptural Icon in Rural Nagasaki

A Design by Masahiko Sato

I6-House is a unique residential architecture project that combines functionality, aesthetics, and a harmonious connection with nature. Designed by Masahiko Sato, this house stands as a sculptural icon in the continuously developing rural housing area of Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

The I6-House is a testament to the designer's vision of creating a space where families can enjoy social interactions and outdoor activities. The terrace space, living area, and dining space are designed to maximize the enjoyment of clear sunny days, perfect for BBQs or private parties.

What sets the I6-House apart is its distinctive design. The eaves and walls of each mass are slanted towards the skies, with different directions, creating a dynamic and visually captivating structure. The use of red cedar material for the exterior finishes adds warmth and a sense of unity with the natural surroundings.

The interior of the I6-House is equally impressive. The cantilevered stairs, also made of red cedar, create a warm and gentle space. Indirect lighting from the bottom part of the handrail enhances the overall ambiance, adding to the sense of tranquility and comfort.

The design specifications of the I6-House further highlight its attention to detail. The ceiling of the living room on the second floor follows the same angle as the roof, elevating towards the light court. This creates a sense of openness to nature and allows natural light to flood the space. The use of red cedar finishes on the ceiling enhances the sense of unity with the external appearance.

The terrace balcony, directly connected to the living, dining, and guest rooms, features vertical wooden shade elements. These elements not only protect the privacy of each room but also maximize natural daylighting, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere.

Entering the I6-House, one is immediately greeted by a tender light that penetrates from the second floor, along with lush vegetation. The design ensures privacy and security while maximizing natural daylighting in the master bedroom, child's bedroom, and entrance hall. The gentle light entering these spaces creates a serene and welcoming environment.

The I6-House was completed in August 2017 in Isahaya City, Nagasaki, Japan. It is a testament to the designer's commitment to creating spaces that enhance the quality of life. Masahiko Sato's design philosophy revolves around harmonizing every element, from function to environment, to create spaces that bring joy and pleasure to people's lives.

The I6-House has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges the innovative and resourceful nature of the design, which contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
